Save the Date: Sat., Sept. 28 - Sun., Sept. 29: UU Climate Justice Revival Workshop Weekend

GNUUC is joining UUs across the land to revive our commitment to climate justice on Saturday, September 28, 2004 (10:00 am to 2:00 pm). Then, on Sunday, September 29, we will have a special Worship Service to celebrate our participation, plus have an Advocacy hour call to action!

Saturday Registration is Required

People can sign up in three ways:

1. Meetuphttps://www.meetup.com/greater-nashville-unitarian-universalists/events/303343986/

2. GNUUC Slack2024_climate_justice_revival

3. GNUUC Sunday Lunch: On Sundays during lunch at Greater Nashville UU Congregation.

Volunteers Needed

We are currently recruiting volunteers to be facilitators, timekeepers and to provide refreshments. Facilitators don’t need to be climate experts or facilitation experts! Facilitators need to be able to guide discussions, manage group dynamics, and foster an inclusive environment.

If you can volunteer, reach out to Caren.

Christmas Eve: Help Needed

It would be wonderful to have a few extra helpers for the Christmas Eve service. If you aren’t already signed up and are willing to help with any of the following, please email Rev. Denise (revdenise@gnuuc.org) before Thursday at 5 p.m.:

  • An extra “camera operator”: Bring your own device & log into Zoom so you can provide views of our vocalists (who will be on the platform, so you don’t need to move around much). You might also provide views of the congregation if you wish.

  • Bell ringers (especially youth): we will need one or two folks to make a joyful noise to welcome us all into the worship service. We have a few bells to provide, but if you have extras, bring ‘em!

  • Greeters: Welcome congregants at the door, help them sign in & mask up.

  • Candle wranglers: Hand out candles & paper bobeches (did you know that’s their name?!) at the doors to the sanctuary, and help collect at the end of the service.

    • Also needed: large baskets or (perhaps festively wrapped) boxes to collect candles in the hall & foyer.

  • Light outener: One attentive person to help switch off lights during the service.

  • Readers: If you are willing to do a reading (or be a backup in case someone doesn’t make it), we have a couple of open spots being assigned soon…

Email revdenise@gnuuuc.org to be part of the team!

What is a Hybrid Service?

During a hybrid service, you can attend either in person or virtually. The goal of the hybrid service is to make the experience of attending a service as similar as possible whether you were attending in person or virtually. If you are attending virtually, you will be able to see, and to be seen. You will be able to see the speaker, the pulpit and the surrounding area, you will be able to see the chalice and people who come up to share joys and concerns. You will be able to hear the speaker, music, and questions and comments from those in attendance, and joys and concerns. You will be able to share joys and concerns much as we have done in virtual services, and those attending in person will be able to see and hear you—Zoom will be projected on the screen in the sanctuary. Attending virtually or in person, you will see and hear, and be seen and be heard.

Are you ready to be back to worship in person?

Are you ready to be back to worship in person? Do you appreciate the work folks have been putting in to bring us together each Sunday?

We've all benefited from the work of a dedicated few. Sadly, the time has come for some of those dedicated volunteers to move on to their next adventures. To keep our services strong and moving toward coming together, we need others willing to pick up the mantle.

Welcome to the Fall 2020 Worship Series

To kick-off our Fall Programming, on August 9, the Board will be speaking on "Vision of Ministry for 2020." At this worship service, the Board will present its Vision of Ministry for the 2020 church year. They will highlight some of the great work that's ongoing in support of that vision. In addition, they will extend an invitation for folks to work with Rev. Cynthia and come up with new ideas to help with that vision. These are difficult times that call for creative ways to support each other and our neighbors. On August 9, we are also pleased to have our Minister, Rev. Cynthia Cain, back from vacation. She will be leading the remaining August services to encapsulate the vision of ministry.

Worship this fall will continue to use the Soul Matter themes.

Starting in September, the first Sunday of the month will be in inter-generational family service that introduces the monthly theme. The 2nd and 3rd Sundays will be done by our minister, Rev. Cynthia Cain. The 4th Sunday we will have a guest speaker.

Services will remain virtual until further notice. The Board is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 statistics and will let us know when these plans change.

A Church that Love Builds

During the Sunday 2/17/19 service about being Unitarian Universalist and crafting our elevator speeches to tell people our loves stories of being part of our UU faith community, we offered these lines for our collective elevator speech (granted, it needs to be a TALL building for this elevator ride). You asked for a copy - here it is - the story of a church that Love builds. -Rev. Carmen Emerson
