Tennessee United for Human Rights is a chapter of United for Human Rights, an international non-profit organization dedicated to implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at local, regional, national and international levels.

Our church's relationship with this human rights event gives us some visibility and recognition. It can make us known to the Tennessee Human Rights Commission and the Metro Human Relations Commission should some occasion arise. It provides an opportunity to recognize the anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That document needs to receive much publicity worldwide in order to make sure that people know what some 198 nations have agreed are essential rights. (Note: our nation does not always live up to those rights.)

This event also provides the opportunity to recognize and honor people who have been outstanding supporters of human rights locally. Honorees will be Rev. Becca Stevens, Dr. James Hildreth, Ernest "Rip" Patton, Jr., and Rev. Sonnye Dixon.

A panel incorporating the theme OUR SHARED HUMANITY: ROOTED IN HOPE will be moderated by Beverly Watts of the Tennessee Human Rights Commission. Panel members will be former Commission Chair Jocelyn Wurzburg and past Human Rights Rising Advocate Awardee Justin Jones.

Nashville Chapter Americans United for Separation of Church and State is one of 11 non-profits chosen from an extensive directory to share in any funds in excess of costs donated toward the celebration.
