Surviving in a complex world is a difficult task for a sentient being. Our perception and thinking are built on processes that are shortcuts that save us from having to think deeply about everything we do, which would quickly overwhelm us. And yet, these same shortcuts are the root of some behaviors we find distasteful, or even reprehensible. To become fully ethical beings, we need to make the extraordinary effort to move beyond, challenge ourselves, and think beyond our built-in heuristics.
