August Share the Plate Organization - Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is our share the plate partner for August.

Second Harvest works to feed hungry people and solve hunger issues in Middle and West Tennessee; it collects, sorts, and distributes food and personal care products to more than 490 partner agencies throughout 46 Middle and West Tennessee counties. Partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, foster care facilities, senior centers, group homes, and youth enrichment programs. Second Harvest thus provides food to a wide assortment of organizations and individuals to help alleviate the widespread problems of hunger among the less affluent in our society.

According to the latest study, released May 2018, 13% of Middle Tennessee residents are food insecure, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to enough food to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is just above the 12.9 percent national average. While the overall rate has decreased since 2011, the prevalence of food insecurity across the country, including in Tennessee, remains historically high since 2008 and has not yet returned to pre-Great Recession levels.

Also, 1 in 5 children in Second Harvest’s 46-county service area are food insecure. Although food insecurity is harmful to anyone, it can be particularly devastating to children due to their increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences.

This is unacceptable in our affluent society, and we Unitarian Universalists need to do whatever we can to alleviate these problems.
