NOAH is thrilled to announce our keynote speaker for this year’s banquet, Dr. Taure Brown, Director of the James Lawson Institute at Vanderbilt University and a sociologist, educator, and organizer from Kinston, North Carolina. His work sits at the intersection of scholarship and action, equipping communities with the tools to challenge injustice and build collective power.
Brown earned his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University, where his research examines media, racial ideology, and political development, including his dissertation Faking the Funk: Hegemonic Antiracism During the Movement for Black Lives.
Before entering academia, Brown organized around housing justice, education equity, and community safety – experiences that continue to shape his leadership and public engagement. His writing and commentary have appeared in The Washington Post and The Atlantic, and he has delivered lectures and keynote addresses at universities and community spaces across the country.
In addition to our keynote speaker, NOAH will be recognizing Walter Searcy, this year’s Flame of Hope Honoree. Walter is a NOAH founding member, a proud Nashvillian, and a titan on transit, access, and affordability. His legacy is one of integrity, leadership, and enduring service to his community – richly deserving of recognition. Join us in honoring Walter at NOAH’s 2026 Banquet!
