Still Spring Garden in January 2021
Look closely for tiny blooms in the ground cover. Birdseye Speedwell (Veronica persica) has bright blue flowers. "The genus name Veronica means 'true image'. It is told that Saint Veronica was the woman who wiped Jesus' face when he fell carrying the cross on the road to Calvary, and her cloth preserved the 'true image' of his face...Speedwell grows along waysides, perhaps greeting travelers on their journey" (Horn and Cathcart). Hoary Bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) has tiny white flowers. The leaves are edible raw or cooked.
